TV always makes the arrest of the main suspect look really exciting. Maybe there is a key change in the dramatic music that is playing over the scene to add to the atmosphere, random citizens start applauding your heroic win in the name of justice and the bad guy starts doing the whole, ‘Okay you win, I’ll tell you everything,’ routine.

In reality it was far more anticlimactic. As far as I knew, I had apprehended a killer. I had narrowed down the suspects based on a quick look round three bedrooms and thought I had nailed the case. I had leapt out of that closet with as much enthusiasm as you can when your lungs are filled with chemical fumes and yet it felt like the moment wasn’t living up to my expectations.

Ms. Meyers looked up at me with confusion. I suppose if you are just minding your own business and a woman jumps at you from a closet then it must be alarming. She seemed to take it all in her stride. She was older than the rest of the guests by maybe twenty years or so, but had maintained her brunette locks, presumably with salon assistance.

Her wrinkles were soft around her eyes and mouth and I wondered if perhaps the reason she didn’t look particularly surprised by my entrance was because she had Botox all over her forehead and her eyebrows literally couldn’t move.

“Who are you exactly?” she said. “Who gave you permission to run around arresting people?”

What a buzzkill. Didn’t she know that I am a woman that takes pictures for the newspaper, builds things, repairs stuff and sometimes teaches photography classes to adults in town on top of my new ‘deputy’ status?

Rude.

“No time for that, come with me,” I said. I reached behind me and, using my magic, produced a pair of handcuffs from my back pocket, slapped them around her left wrist and then the other to my right wrist. Okay, maybe I hadn’t thought that bit through, but she was coming with me whether she liked it or not. I started to pull at the handcuffs like a dogwalker trying to speed up a reluctant puppy.

“What are you doing? Do you know who I am?!” she protested.

“You’re a stone-cold killer and a bottle brunette. Get out the door.” I tugged harder and she was brought to her feet. I half-dragged her towards the door and out into the corridor. The sound of my voice had attracted a crowd and they were waiting outside their own bedroom doors. Francis was holding the odor-neutralizer that I had left outside his room. At least one victory for me today then.

“Where are you taking me?” Ms. Meyers asked.

“The dining room, the one that doesn’t have a dead woman in it,” I snapped. Taking her to the top of the stairs and trying to coax her down without being too forceful was hard. I didn’t want to accidentally throw her, especially as I would go tumbling after her on account of us being attached.
